the history of world cup began when uruguay beat argentina 4-2 back in 1930,hence registering the country's name as the winners of the first ever edition.Every successive edition saw an increased number of participants from 42 in 1930 to over 200 in 2010 of which only 32 qualified for the world cup finals in south africa.
although we are a very huge country with sufficient resources....!!!!!
INDIA seem to be nowhere in the horizon.Its worth analysing why our football team is not doing well.Our latest FIFA rakings is at 144.
In fact we had a promising past,we won the Asian games gold in '51 and '62.Also,very few may be knowing that the team reached semifinals of the Melbourne Olympics in '56.We also qualified for the '50 FIFA world cup(default;withdrawal by all opponents).The more popular notion is that India could not make it to the World Cup since FIFA did not permit them to play barefooted.This is just a myth as we played in '52 Olympics barefooted.
However, the governing body, AIFF, decided against going to the World Cup being unable to understand the importance of the event at that time.For them there was nothing bigger than the OLYMPICS. The reason given by AIFF was that there was not enough practice time along with selection problems, although FIFA had agreed to bear a major part of the travel expenses.
While the past had been promising the present is equally gloomy.States like goa , kerala , west bengal are doing their part but still is lot to be done to make the sport brighter......
